Vango Nitestar 450 Review

We could not possibly be accused of not testing this piece of kit thoroughly, both of us have owned a Vango nitestar 450 sleeping bag and both of us have totally worn them out too!

This is a winter sleeping bag and so can be expected to be quite big and weighty, but the Nitestar really is quite big and weighty. Packed it measures 48cm x 30cm and weighs 2300grams, that’s a whopper I must say when compared to other four season bags.

What is not whopping though is the price. On Vango’s website its £42.99. That is CHEAP for a four season sleeping bag, its hard to believe really.

Warmth wise, this is a real winner. Vango’s ‘extreme’ rating for this bag is -26ºC and they ain’t joking either. I have personally slept out in mine when the mercury hit -22ºC and did not suffer too much discomfort either. My biggest concern was that I left my water bottle outside my sleeping bag, you can imagine what happened. My mate however literally nearly froze to death that night in his other brand sleeping bag.

A variety of draw cords, Velcro and zips can be pulled, fastened and zipped to keep you cosy from just about every angle. You can make yourself look like a worm with a human face should you wish or need to.

An internal, zipped ‘stash’ pocket is provided for any valuables which is useful. The compression sack helps minimise the size.

To sum up then, this is a big heavy sleeping bag, this however is not a problem for car camping or if you only have a short hike. What makes this sleeping bag a very good choice for winter camping though is that it is so warm, and really, really cheap for the quality that you are getting. It is DOE recommended.

Overall rating 9/10 Really warm, a fantastic winter sleeping bag if pack size is not a concern.
